Coconut Chai Smoothie

This might like a long recipe, but once you have the Chai Spice blend on hand, things go much more quickly. I like to make up my spice blend ahead of time, and then keep it in a small jar for easy weekday morning smoothie prep.

This Coconut Chai smoothie is perfect for anyone who’s tired of drinking the same old green smoothie every day… or anyone who’s trying to break a sugary chai latte habit!

This smoothie is satisfyingly sweet, with warming chai spices to perk up the palate. It also includes brazil nuts, which are insanely high in selenium — just 1 ounce contains more than 700% of the recommended daily value! Selenium is an important mineral that is important for thyroid, reproductive, and heart health. It can also help reduce cancer risk, and has been shown to help regulate mood, anxiety, and depression.

Serves 2.

Ingredients

  • FOR THE CHAI SPICE BLEND
  • 4 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons clove
  • 3 tablespoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1 teaspoon coriander
  • 1 teaspoon cacao
  • FOR THE SMOOTHIE
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 cup filtered water
  • 2 brazil nuts (Ideally, soak these in some water overnight. This will help facilitate the blending process, and make them easier to digest.)
  • 2 tablespoons flax seed
  • 1 heaping teaspoon of the Chai Spice blend
  • 2 cups frozen mango
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened almond butter
  • 2 tablespoons toasted coconut
  • 1-2 medjool dates *remove pits! To soften, soak in water for a few minutes.
  • OPTIONAL — 1/2 cup of ice cubes, for extra frostiness

Directions

  • Step 1

Place the Chai Spice Blend spice ingredients into a small bowl and stir. You can keep this in an airtight container and store in a cool, dry place for months. Over time, however, the flavor may lose its potency. But since this smoothie is so yummy, I doubt it’ll be sitting around for long.

  • Step 2

To prepare the smoothie: place ingredients into blender, adding frozen fruit and ice last.

  • Step 3

Process until creamy and smooth. Add water a quarter-cup at a time if you want a thinner consistency. Serve immediately or store some in the fridge for later. Salud!
