The Deliciously Anti-Inflammatory Golden Milk Latte

Today, we're talking about one of my favorite cozy beverages for fall: the Golden Milk Latte.

But before we talk about the recipe, we need to understand why this latte is so special. In order to do that, we need to talk about inflammation. Inflammation. We hear that word thrown around a lot these days.

But what does it actually mean?

And what can we do about it?

A range of troubling and potentially life-threatening conditions fit under inflammation's vast umbrella — such as heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, autoimmune disorders, Alzheimer's disease, and chronic pain. Famously dubbed the “silent killer” on the cover of Time Magazine back in 2004, chronic inflammation is being studied for its possible role as the root cause for our most common modern-day diseases.

The good news in all of this is that following an anti-inflammatory diet can reap major rewards in a relatively short period of time. If you're looking for proof, look no further than the documentary, Forks Over Knives.

It's one of my favorite films to recommend to clients because of its powerful food-as-medicine message, and the positive stories of real people who are able to heal from very serious health issues simply by changing the way they eat.

Anti-Inflammatory Recipes

The recipes here on my website — as well as the recipes I share with people who participate in my group coaching programs — are all designed to be anti-inflammatory by using whole, unrefined, plant-based ingredients.

One of my favorite anti-inflammatory ingredients to use in the kitchen is turmeric, or more specifically, curcumin, a compound found in turmeric. I use turmeric in curries, soups, smoothies, sauces — and this magical little elixir called Golden Milk.

The Golden Milk Latte

Sometimes I use fresh turmeric — which is becoming increasingly easy to find in natural grocery stores — but often I rely on the powdered form. Both are powerful, and can be used to create delicious, inflammation-soothing fare.

Turmeric's effect on the body can be boosted by two things: heating it, and combining it with black pepper. I also like to add a bit of healthy fat such as coconut oil or ghee to help the body absorb the nutrients. And because it's, um, DELICIOUS, that's why!

This combination of heat and pepper and fat gives Golden Milk Latte its power. Sure, it may be creamy, satisfying, sweet, and lush, but don't mistake its mellow vibe for lackluster results. This delicious beverage is as mighty as it is soothing — to both your body and your palate.

The Golden Milk latte can be a wonderful replacement for your morning coffee (when you're ready to give up caffeine). I also like to enjoy it after dinner, as I'm winding down for sleep.

If you're familiar with Golden Milk, and want to take it up a notch, feel free to add a stress-busting adaptogen such as powdered ashwaganda (follow the dosage instructions), or medicinal mushrooms such as cordyceps, reishi, or chaga. There are numerous mushroom-powered blends on the market, including OM organic mushroom nutrition, and the powdered mushrooms from Oregon's own Mountain Rose Herbs.
